What is Shared Hosting?

Share hosting is a service provided by many web host providers where they partition a web server so that it can act as a virtual host for many websites.  Typically bringing up a web page for one user takes very little power on the part of the host. As a result a typical web host can handle thousands of requests a minute.  This load is almost never present for an average website and as a result shared hosting works well for many types of websites because it allows a host to be effectively used and shared among many users.
