There are many options for web hosting. There are however trade offs.  In general hosting that is free is usually limited in some way.  Here are some options available:

  • Many ISPs offer hosting for free when you sign up with them.  This hosting however is usually very limited.  It's normally only straight html hosting.  Not even scripts are allowed many times, and certainly not a database for PHP capability.
  • There are free web hosting sites on the Internet that allow you to create a web site and host your site there.  The problem again is limited capability (html only) and third party ads are often associated with such sites. Some services give you more control and features, but then you can't associate your own domain name to the site without forwarding or some other such work around.
  • You can setup a server of your own, install Apache and then you'll be able to host your own site. This option can also quickly become sub optimal when the Internet connection goes down or the server crashes.  Power failures and security can also be issues. Also many Internet service providers such as Rogers and Bell frown upon you hosting off their connections so you may be required to stop hosting off such a connection if they detect the presence your server.

We suggest going with a shared web hosting service.  This service provide a reliable server for a very reasonable price.  Shared hosting (where many websites are hosted on a single server) have come down significantly in price over the past few years to the point where they are very reasonable priced now at under $10  a month in many cases.  These services host your website in a power backed up server with a high speed Internet connection.  This means your customers will not have to wait for your web pages to update.

Most of these hosting companies have bandwidth caps that are so large they are basically a non issue. 500GB for a typical web site is a threshold that will normally not be reached.  For example a web forum with 150 users typically only uses about 1-3 GB of bandwidth in a month.  An e-commerce site receiving 50-70 hits a day will use about 3-5GB of bandwidth in a month.

We do recommend a few of hosting companies that we've used and dealt with on a regular basis. One is our own affiliate:

We can also recommend Host Papa which is a large Canadian Hosting company that also has excellent customer service and provides a simple but extremely full featured hosting option.  Their hosting packages are very simple to understand since they offer only one single full featured hosting package. For as little at $5.95 per months you get a very powerful hosting package will all the feature you might ever want or require for almost all applications.

No matter which hosting option you choose the Web Design Guy will work with you to setup and customize your website on the server of your choice.
