Getting Traffic to your website
Ok, so you've created your web site, and published it. You've gone through a lot of work to create an easy and intuitive website and worked to explain why people should come to buy from you. You've added your address, e-mail, phone number, and provided lots of useful information for your potential customers.
Now what?
You've waited, you've watched, but people are not coming to your website. Why?
Well, just like any endeavour, creating your website is only the first step. Once your site has been published you need to take steps to get people to come to your site. There are a number of ways to get traffic to your website.
Search Engines and Google
Google is the number one search engine for many. There are dozens and dozens of search engines, but Google is at the top of the list of search engines people use. Getting your web site listed on Google goes a long way to getting traffic to your website.

The Web Design Guy will help you to submit your website to Google and 2-3 of the other top search engines. Once your site has been submitted the search engines will actively crawl your site and index the information. Usually within 1-2 months you'll find your web will appear in the search engine listing for relevant keywords.
Links from Other sites
You don't have to go through work submitting your website to the various search engines. Just getting your web site linked to from other sites be they suppliers or customers goes a long way to having your web site show up in the search engines. Search engines are always out there crawling the web to detect new web sites and having links pointing to your site makes it much easier for the search engines to find you.
Links from on-line Forums
In some cases there may be web forums related to your line of business. Getting involved in that forum and having a link back to your website in your signature does two things. It helps with search engines finding your website, and it provides some advertising for your business in a related forum.
Be careful when posting on forums to follow the rules and etiquette of the forum. Some forums may not even allow a signature link back to your website. Usually its best to contribute to the forum in a useful way before advertising there. Each forum will be different and have a different community spend some time getting to know the forum and the members before going too far.
Web Advertising
Many of the search engines provide a means of having ads. It's a little like having an ad in the Yellow Pages. When someone goes to google as an example and search for an item your ad would be displayed near the top of the page. If the user clicks on your ad then a small fee is charged to you for every click.
Advertising on the web in this way is an excellent way to direct some traffic to your website. Especially while your waiting for the search engines to get you listed.
